The purpose of our Constitution is to remind us, with the force of law, that individual human beings have inherent dignity and worth and that the authority of the state to take a person's life, liberty, and property is limited. When the government brings its enormous power to bear against an individual person, and especially when the accusation is such that the public forgets the presumption of innocence, the accused person's last hope is an experienced and caring lawyer.
